PEER REVIEW

Update from “Retiring Chairperson” Kent Schaufelberger

To the Pacific Community of Practice:

As the newly “retired” peer review chair of the former Pacific Region of ACPE, I’d like to notify you of changes that are presently happening in peer review process — as the national office takes over responsibility for administrating peer review for the Certification Commission — and secondly, remind those of you who are up for peer review of a change of schedule imposed by the Certification Implementation Team while they are developing guidelines for peer review during the first half of this year (2018).

1)    First of all I’d like to remind those of you who these changes will primarily effect.  The following list are those active supervisors who are in the 2018 class of the Pacific Region’s three year rotation for peer review.  It is our largest class, by far!  My apologies that this may seem to be a rather abrupt and impersonal way to notify you all, but for the sake of the community…:

Caveat:  At this point I am the messenger, if you had a change your status with regard to peer review, I suggest you hold your notification of that change until there is a clearer policy for peer review and the mechanism for notification of change of status is organized at the national office:

(Please check your email)

Additionally there are six persons who were given extensions into 2018 to finish their peer reviews.  They are:

(Please check your email)

2)    Recently, in the January 26, 2018 edition of the ACPE News this announcement came from Gary Sartain (member of the Certification Implementation Team):

Important Update Regarding Peer Reviews
By Gary Sartain, Certification Implementation Team
ACPE News  | January 26, 2018

ACPE now requires that active Certified Educators participate in a peer review every three years. That means that Certified Educators who did not do a peer review in 2015, 2016 or 2017 will need to do one in 2018.

For members required to do peer reviews in 2018, please wait until the new guidelines are published on June 15, 2018. Please send concerns and questions regarding the process or new guidelines to CertificationChair@acpe.edu.

The Certification Implementation Team is working with the national office to collate peer review records from the former regions. Members who are determined to be due for a review in 2018 will be notified. However, there may well be gaps in the data, meaning people will have to self-monitor and be proactive about initiating a review if they are due.

If you are due for peer review in 2018, please refrain from holding your review until the end of June, as the implementation plan is as follows:

  • New guidelines for Level 1 & 2 Peer Reviews and National Faculty (those involved in Certified Educator Education) Peer Reviews will be developed by April 1, 2018.
  • Two volunteers from each category (Level 1 & 2 / National Faculty) will be enlisted to do their peer reviews using the new guidelines prior to the ACPE national meeting in May.
  • At the national meeting in May, a workshop will be offered about the new guidelines with the four participants and their committee members. They will be invited to share their experience and any suggestions. Feedback will also be solicited from workshop participants.
  • Alterations will be made based on feedback from the test group and the workshop participants. The final guidelines will be published on the ACPE website and circulated by June 15, 2018.

Thanks for your attention to these matters and blessings to you all in 2018

EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS TO POST

The Education Committee has worked long and hard to build educational resources for our members.  We have just completed the 5th Symposium on Supervision with 20 plus participants from two Regions.  From that meeting, materials were gathered to post on the new Regional webpage.   More materials about spiritual care and education are welcome.  The review group will gladly receive bibliographies, short articles, didactic presentations or other materials useful to a CPE Supervisor or spiritual care provider.  Send your offerings or ideas to pacregcurators@gmail.com .   The “curators” will be in contact with you.
